Programme and Projects

Pasture and Profit in Protected Landscapes in England

Pasture and Profit in Protected Landscapes is funded by the Farming in Protected Landscapes Programme (FiPL) offering free events and in some locations mentoring across several English National Landscapes for farmers interested in increasing farm profits and biodiversity through the management of grazing animals. Scroll down to find out about the current projects underway.
Can I join the programme if I am not based in the project area?

It is part of the stipulation of the funding that those joining the programme of educational events must be based in the project area. If you are based just outside one of these areas, please get in touch. To be a trainer or speaker at an event, you do not need to be based in one of these areas.

Can I join the programme if I am already a PfL member?

Yes, you are permitted to join the wider programme.

Do I have to become PfL certified if I join the programme?

No, there is no expectation to become PfL certified.

Pasture and Profit

The North

Pasture and Profit in Protected Landscapes supports five National Landscapes in the North of England to run a free, innovative mentoring and events programme until March 2026.
Continuing the momentum of the last two and a half years, Pasture for Life is delighted to have been awarded Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) funding from five areas in the North of England (Yorkshire Dales, Lake District National Parks, Nidderdale, Forest of Bowland and North Pennines National Landscapes) to continue to run a free, innovative, mentoring and events programme until March 2026 for farmers based in these protected landscapes.
Mentoring

Grazing management mentoring

For farmers in these regions, the programme comprises of three main elements:
  • A comprehensive series of on-farm events and webinars, covering a wide range of topics. The events programme, which includes a study tour, is shaped by the farmers and focuses on topics based on feedback from the project farmers.
  • Everyone who is part of the programme can access additional support through a suite of educational resources covering a wide range of topics. These are located in an easily accessible online resource hub.
  • Everyone has the opportunity to undertake mentoring - flexible and tailored to suit you, on farm.
  • If not already a member, free Pasture for Life membership for one year, worth £120.

Pasture for Life supports you in your farming journey no matter what stage your are at, and irrespective of your long-term plans to certify or not.

Whether you are in the process of making changes to your grazing system, you want to learn more before implementing change, and to join a group like-minded farmers, we invite you to sign up.

We welcome and support farmers in the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Parks, Nidderdale, Forest of Bowland and North Pennines National Landscapes, who may be considering or are already, changing how they manage their ruminant livestock enterprises.

Soil event in High Weald

And we know there’s nothing more powerful than learning from your fellow farmers. Across the UK, participating farmers have opened their gates to reveal how their low‑input grazing systems - whether mob grazing, rotational grazing or conservation grazing - are helping them:

  • Reduce fertiliser, feed and fuel costs
  • Boost resilience against flooding, drought and extreme weather
  • Multiply biodiversity, from wildflowers to pollinators
  • Improve soil health, pasture quality and overall landscape management
  • Cut out extra workloads tied to indoor housing
  • Reduce worm burden naturally on their flocks and herds
  • Increase profit margins while farming more sustainably in a protected landscape

We are running a series of events, such as:

  • Farmer‑hosted walks showcasing nature‑friendly grazing in action
  • Interactive webinars on grazing practice, soil management, and agroecology
  • Training sessions focused on soil health, carbon capture, biodiversity and integrating livestock
  • Peer discussion groups to share experience and co‑create solutions for the unique challenges of farming in the High Weald
Be part of a growing community of High Weald farmers embracing regenerative pasture-based farming that deliver both nature and profit.

Participant reflection

The programme has opened my eyes to new ideas and future avenues for exploration and let me realise that I am not alone in believing there is a better, more holistic way to farm than has been traditional in the past 50 years or so.
